The amount of sleep you've lost since becoming a parent will literally exhaust you.
Remember back in the day when you got enough sleep? You'd go to bed when you felt like it, then wake up, well, whenever, at least on the weekends. Yeah, it's a distant memory for me, too.
Because parenthood, while wonderful, has robbed me of the control over my own sleeping schedule. And I couldn't even imagine how many hours of zzz's I've missed out on in the nine years since I became a mom. That is until a calculator came along that actually quantifies the exact amount of snooze-time people give up to be parents.
All you do is enter the age of your kid, or in my case, kids, and the calculator spits out a number that will make your head spin. I almost fell over when the calculation revealed that I've lost close to 10,000 hours of slumber since my first child was born. That's 416 days, or 14 months.
I'm exhausted just thinking about that. But truthfully, it sounds about right. I'm flashing back to all those nights I didn't sleep for more than, oh, 2 minutes. And the many middle-of-the-night feedings I've endured. And nightmares. Teething. Sicknesses. Then each time we'd get on a good schedule with sleeping, I had another baby, and the cycle started all over again.
The good news? You aren't going to like this if you are currently beyond sleep-deprived. But all those lost hours of time between the sheets are totally worth it. Because being a parent is awesome, even if you're exhausted. With nine years of perspective on the matter, I can say without hesitation, I wouldn't trade all the restful nights in the world for the joy of motherhood.
